In health care, great ideas often remain just that—ideas. Physicians with innovative solutions often lack the resources to navigate the complex landscape of medical innovation.

Anesthesiologists Dr. Janny Xue Chen Ke and Dr. Alana Flexman have developed a practical innovation roadmap outlining Providence’s process and resources for physicians. Born from their own experiences navigating prediction modeling, digital health initiatives, and industry collaborations, this physician-led project will help to navigate the key steps and complex processes of setting an innovation in motion.

The roadmap captures what the innovation process at Providence currently looks like—acknowledging that it is still evolving. It is intended to help streamline and clarify the journey by summarizing the practical steps needed to move projects forward. “We hope it will support physicians from the earliest stages of their ideas by providing clearer guidance, connecting them with key resources, and highlighting important considerations like intellectual property, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder engagement,” explains Dr. Ke.

Ultimately, the goal is to foster a culture where physicians feel encouraged to innovate, supported throughout the process, and set up for success from the very beginning. By condensing the hard-won knowledge of physicians who’ve traveled the path before into practical guidance, the team hopes to streamline the process and reduce logistic hurdles.

A broader version of the roadmap, designed to meet the needs of all Providence Health Care staff, is also in development. The PHC Physician and Surgeons Society (PHC-PASS) Discover, Learn & Innovate for Impact Pillar and PHC Innovarium partnered to develop the roadmap, with project funding from the Specialist Services Committee Facility Engagement Initiative.
